This was the Fête Chinoise 2023 Lunar New Year Signature Gala + Showcase by PALETERRA Inc. It was the kind of night that only happens once a year, where culture, creativity, and community came together under the shimmering chandeliers of Toronto’s Shangri-La Hotel. The Fête Chinoise Lunar New Year Gala marked not only the return of a signature event but also the celebration of its eighth edition. This gala, known as Canada’s most luxurious celebration of modern Chinese culture, was more than just an event—it was a story brought to life through art, performance, and tradition.
As guests arrived, the entrance set the tone for the evening. Celebrities, community leaders, and cultural icons strolled down the red carpet, their elegant black-tie attire juxtaposed against the vivid backdrop of tradition and modernity. Masters of Ceremonies Lainey Lui and Wallace Wong welcomed the over 800 guests, while the flashing cameras captured the arrival of notable figures like Marvel’s Meng’er Zhang, chefs Craig Wong and Trevor Lui, tech innovators Eva and Allen Lau, and government representatives like Minister Mary Ng and Mayor John Tory. All were there not only to celebrate but to support the evening’s beneficiary, the Scarborough Health Network.
As guests moved from the red carpet into the grand ballroom, they found themselves transported to an eclectic courtyard inspired by Malaysia’s historic Blue Mansion, a stunning and culturally rich property that had been featured in the Fête Chinoise Design Annual just the year before. The room was a living canvas of colour, design, and detail. Bougainvillaea vines, arranged by Stemz Flowers, climbed arched walls, framing the elegant courtyard in vibrant pinks and greens. The floor was a Wonderland of Culture, with each corner offering new and immersive cultural experiences—from culinary delights to artistic displays.
The night’s first act—a festive lion dance—brought the audience to life with its rhythmic drumming and energetic movements, heralding the start of the Lunar New Year. As the lions danced, the stage was set for the evening’s performers. Canadian singer-songwriter Tyler Shaw’s smooth voice filled the room, followed by a soulful performance by Hong Kong artist Yoyo Sham. But perhaps the most striking performance of the evening came from Goh Ballet, led by the ever-elegant Chan Hon Goh, whose graceful choreography fused Chinese tradition with the artistry of classical ballet.
As the performances unfolded, guests indulged in an elevated culinary experience that spanned both time and tradition. Food stations were scattered throughout the venue, each offering a modern twist on classic dishes. Jamaican-Chinese-Canadian favourite Patois served up its signature fusion, while Superfresh’s pan-Asian team brought bold flavours to the table. Guests sampled nostalgic Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng treats from Good Catch Café, and modernized egg waffles from Golden Bubbles provided a delightful sweet bite. Dragon Beard Candy, hand-pulled by Master Pan, was a rare and mesmerizing sight as delicate strands of sugar were woven into intricate candies right before the guests’ eyes.
The experience was more than just culinary. Artists from around the world brought their unique perspectives to the event, transforming the space into an interactive art showcase. TikKa From East, a UK-based Hong Kong artist, exhibited his blend of East and West through art toys and paintings, while Nicky Wang’s architectural metalwork from Lukim Metal offered a sleek, modern interpretation of Chinese artistry. Traditional Chinese calligraphy was represented by Master Guan, whose award-winning work provided a poignant reminder of the country’s rich cultural history.
But it wasn’t just the big names or dazzling performances that made Fête Chinoise 2023 stand out—it was the careful balance of tradition and innovation that captivated every guest. The main ballroom’s transformation into the Blue Mansion was a work of art in itself. Using a combination of 2D backdrops, laser-cut elements, and real antique vases for the floral arrangements, the space felt as if it had been plucked from a dream and placed inside the hotel. Blue walls, arched openings, and gold-painted details echoed the grandeur of the original mansion, creating a scene straight out of a movie. Eclectic seating arrangements, colourful placemats, and charming florals enhanced the room, with flickering candlelight casting a warm glow over the enchanted evening.
And the evening’s surprises didn’t stop there. While the VIP dinner attendees enjoyed a four-course meal in the ballroom’s red-themed dining space, the rest of the venue was buzzing with post-dinner activities. One room featured a whimsical, rabbit-themed installation in honour of the Year of the Rabbit, offering guests a playful escape into a world of art and creativity. Another space was transformed into a moody, black-and-gold moon and poetry art installation, where food stations flanked the art, offering guests a truly immersive dining experience.
As the evening drew to a close, the air was thick with excitement and joy. Guests had not only witnessed incredible performances but had also engaged with art, tasted the future of modern Chinese cuisine, and supported a cause close to the heart of the community. Every element of Fête Chinoise had been carefully curated to celebrate Chinese culture in a contemporary way—one that was aspirational, refreshing, and deeply authentic.
The success of Fête Chinoise wasn’t just in the execution of the evening’s logistics or the stunning design of the venue. It was in the seamless blending of old and new, East and West, tradition and innovation. By paying homage to its cultural roots while embracing the future, Fête Chinoise created a space where Chinese-Canadian culture could flourish and evolve—celebrated by a diverse crowd of celebrities, community leaders, and cultural enthusiasts.
